Living in zones 5,6,and 7 once meant few plant choices. The want of a lush more tropical look of palms combined with bananas, bamboo and other bold foliage has been met, the list continues to grow. In some cases a little extra work is involved, but well worth it. The use of hostas, ferns, and grasses (some hardy to as low as zone 3) not only offer the foundation to creating an exotic feel but are dependable should something go wrong with your more marginal plantings.

 

In the years since 1999 we have shipped Musa basjoo (which is also known as The Japanese fiber banana) to zones 5, 6 and 7 areas such Indiana, Ohio, Mississippi, and cold dry areas of Colorado where they have had good success. Trachycarpus fortunei, the chinese windmill palm ( Trachycarpus takil is also showing good hardiness) has been grown for considerable time in colder areas of The United States and northern Europe.The use of bold foliage plants such as Petasites japonicus (zones 5-9) Gunnera manicata (zones 7-10). Strong vertical lines to contrast with the palms and hardy bananas are achieved with ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Hakonechloa.

All the plants offered by Hardytropicals.com and Bambu-u.com are propagated, grown and shipped by 1 person, me: Marc Hilt. Of course this means there are smaller numbers (and hopefully fewer mistakes) which means early orders in the growing season helps insure your order is complete and up to size. Most orders are shipped the same day. The exception on shipping is we no longer ship plants out on Thursday because of the potential of prolonged shipping time

Not all plants are available at all times in mail order sizes. I try to keep the site up to date, but can fall behind.

Ordering is handled through the PayPal check out system, You do not need to have a PayPal account! The check out allows you to use a credit card just like at any other store.

Why the PayPal check out?

We had a ssl certificate for years with no security breaches. But I had my own card information stolen from a seemingly secure site which prompted me to do some research. The search revealed major flaws in the way ssl certificates where often installed so I opted to let one of the big companies who's job is to handle money (I am suppose to raise plants) be the check out system.
